Profile Katrina Herbert

Katrina Herbert is a native of Kalamazoo, Michigan. One of six children, she credits her parents for her passion for education and community service. She attended Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's in Secondary Education/Art. Desiring to cultivate her knowledge of different cultures and community development, she spent two years in the Peace Corps as a Health Promotion Officer with the Ministry of Health in Fiji.  During this time she became intrigued by the influence of social conditions on health and vice versa. Subsequently, she completed a dual-degree masters program in Social Work and Public Health at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. While in school she had many rewarding experiences, including working with patients and communities through the university’s Comprehensive Cancer Center and as a research assistant with the Prevention Research Center of Michigan.

Katrina is excited to participate in the RWJF fellowship and hopes to learn skills that will enable her to engage in effective community based health efforts, especially cancer control and prevention with communities of color. She also hopes this experience will allow her to become a resource for community based organizations who seek to enhance their evaluation efforts.
